My name is Sandra Uhl RN MSN. I am a nurse, and I am also a freelance writer. I have been a nurse for 35+years.
I graduated from nursing school from Cerritos College in 1984 with my ADN Degree. The first person in my family to graduate from college. I worked for 5 years as a General Surgical and Medical Nurse. Next, I began serving in labor and delivery where I served for 12 years as a staff nurse, also as charge nurse and preceptor to new nurses. I served in labor and delivery and newborn nursery as an Assistant Head Nurse for 2 years.
My biggest accomplishment during this time was the institution of “Rooming in” a revolutionary concept at that time, where the baby doesn’t have to remain in the nursery but can stay in the mother’s room as long as she wants for the purposes of nursing the baby and increased supervised bonding time with the mother. I designed and implemented quality assurance tools on pertinent patient care issues. I also designed and implemented patient discharge checklists, new policies and procedures, and new forms for use on the unit. For 3 years I worked as a public health nurse, traveling around the county to provide care to babies for well checks and immunizations, and to adults for the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and disorders.
I served for 2 years as a School Nurse after acquiring my BSN from the University of Phoenix. I worked for another 2 years doing quality assurance, ensuring compliance to JCAHO standards for a medical surgical setting. Preparing reports for upper management advising changes in practice as needed and assuring compliance with JCAHO standards. Next, I served 10 years as an Instructor and Course Coordinator in Mental Health at a school of nursing both in a teaching position and as a supervising nurse for other instructors and coordinator of the course. During this time, I accomplished my MSN from the University of Phoenix. I have always been a writer and have always written poetry and short works.
